Vision statement
At Hadleigh Community Primary School, we aim to foster confident, lifelong learners through a broad, balanced and creative curriculum. Mathematics is central to this, equipping children with the skills and knowledge to thrive in modern Britain and beyond. Rooted in the National Curriculum, our maths curriculum promotes fluency, reasoning and problem-solving through a mastery approach that believes all children can succeed. Children are encouraged to discuss methods, justify reasoning, and learn from mistakes in a safe and supportive environment.
The Big Five Ideas underpin our teaching: coherence ensures small, connected steps build deep understanding; representation and structure make abstract ideas accessible; mathematical thinking encourages reasoning and explanation; fluency develops efficient, accurate recall and making links (7+2 = 9 so 0.7 + 0.2 = 0.9); and variation challenges pupils to see patterns and make connections.

We embed metacognitive strategies (explicit modelling and scaffolding using I Do, We Do, You Do) to develop independent, reflective learners who can plan, monitor, and evaluate their thinking.
Learning is enriched through purposeful links across the curriculum, real-life contexts, visitors, and events that make maths meaningful and engaging. Our values of respect, honesty, and kindness create a nurturing atmosphere where all learners are supported and challenged.
Our aim is to develop confident, curious mathematicians with the resilience and mindset to embrace challenge—and a passion for learning that lasts a lifetime.
