(Nursery, Reception, Year 1, Year 2)

In the Early Years Foundation Stage (Nursery and Reception), children interact with music by playing games and singing songs. The use a number of percussion instruments to support their developing musical understanding. They begin to use the musical elements ‘tempo’ and ‘expression’ to shape the songs they sing and the music they interact with.

In Year 1, children begin to compose their own music, using body percussion and simple instruments. There is a big focus on vocal skills in this year of the curriculum, including how to warm up properly and look after our voices.

We call Year 2 “the year of the instruments” as this is when the children are introduced to most of our core classroom instruments: the djembe, the glockenspiel and the ukulele. They use these instruments to learn about rhythm, melody and harmony, giving them a solid grounding for key stage 2.
